Making Knowledge Visible

In this talk, Manuel Lima explores the way our visualization of knowledge is shifting from linear representative metaphors (most notably the tree), into what is better described as a “network”. He explores the difference in the way information and knowledge, as well as the natural world, react and collaborate. Being able to communicate theoretical ideas or scientific evidence in more visually appealing ways is a cruciall for teaching and communicating research outcomes to diverse publics. Lima explains how being able to visualize the realistic complexities of networks will be essential in fostering a sense of interconnectedness that will serve to assist many of those working towards social change in fully expressing a need for “togetherness”. My research program has also been exploring the use of visualizations to explain some of our information, and data visualization will beome even more important in making 'big data' meaningful and more accessible to everyone and not just some.
