Please see this link from The Tyee explaining a proposal to build a 32-storey market-rental housing tower in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. A new plan for the area ironically entitled Uplifting the Downtown Eastside and Building Inclusive Communities that Work for All Residents is making dramatic changes to the previous plans that focused on more inclusive social housing.
The Globe and Mail recently published a two-page article on the drug problems affecting Pandora Avenue in downtown Victoria. Despite the money spent on the addiction and homelessness in the Downtown Eastside and suggested policies for addressing the problems in Vancouver, the challenges are only becoming greater.
When will decision-makers learn there is only one way to address the problem, provide social housing for each and every person with social support, as Sweden has done. Linked here is a case study on United We Can created in the Downtown that you may also find interesting.
