France Leads the Way

Once again, France is finding viable ways to ‘change the rules’ of the game to transition to more sustainable community development. Their newest move sees them passing legislation that will require all unused and unsold retail food items be donated to charity. This simultaneously addresses the issues of food waste, and hunger amongst the more economically disadvantaged members of society. It’s a seemingly simple solution, with a lot of support both within the government and from the population.  It’s by no means a new idea, examples of which have already been informally implemented in several ways across the globe. There is criticism of the move however, with some questioning that it should be the responsibility of the industry to be more waste conscious and socially minded in their practices and procedures. I think the question is then: Why not both?
