Living Well While Dying

Memories and grief have their own time lines, today is my beloved son's birthday, who died tragically in 1998, but maybe all deaths are tragic to those who love them. When my cherished mother died over two years ago I started another blog series called Living Well while Dying.

The Sharing Economy--Ontario Leads the Way

Uber and AirBNB are very popular services, but face serious opposition from the traditional hotel and taxi service industries, and in some cities, attacks have happened on Uber drivers (in Ottawa). We need new solutions on how best to ensure the new 'sharing economy' co-exists with more traditional business models. Services like those mentioned above are not without their own brand of quirks, but essentially they provide a more direct business model, giving everyone involved a more autonomous approach to choosing the type of service that’s right for them.

Honey, Bees and Life

We’ve heard so much lately about the importance of maintaining healthy colonies of bees. That’s why it’s so nice to be able to say that the unlikely locale of Vancouver’s downtown eastside is home to one of the most productive hives around. But that’s not the sweetest part of this story.  Julia Common, a hobbyist beekeeper introduced the hive to the Hastings Urban Farm with the hope that tending to the bees would prove cathartic and inspiring for members of this perceived 'marginalized' community.

Boomers Let's Get Moving

I haven't seen the picture of the child yet, the young refugee lying dead on the beach, but I just heard it on the CBC news. It brings back the picture of the young girl in the Vietnam war. I hadn't thought of this myself, but I am now going to to look into sponsoring a Syrian family. As my research shows, we seldom act until we perceive a crisis, well, we now have a human crisis, and boomers, let's get moving. Each of us could sponsor a family, so what are the next steps to galvanize a Canadian humanitarin response?

Paying Back Double

This new study is really cool, showing again that by doing right by the environment is doing right for yourself. Did you know that people who live on a street with 10 more trees on average (both on the street and in their backyards) makes you feel as healthy as if you were seven years younger or making $10,000 more a year?
