Cities on the Front Line

Municipalities ought to be at the forefront of transformative climate action, argues this piece from The National Observer. Communities have the tools and the ideas—such as harnessing local energy and reducing emissions from transportation and buildings—but not the resources. As our MC3 research shows in British Columbia, the best scenario for accelerating innovation is when there is policy congruence between national, provincial and local governments collaborating together, coupled with political and staff alignment.

These suggestions and more are put forth in the Columbia Institute’s recent report, “Top Asks for Climate Action: Ramping up Low Carbon Communities,” which is available as a PDF here.
