Youth Are Leading the Way

Penpon Project, a youth-led nature restoration project in Wales, is tackling ecological decline in the heart of Brecon Beacons National Park. A group of 12-17-year-olds will soon be working with tenant farmers, landowners, conservationists, and local stakeholders, to draft restoration plans that promote healthy soils, clean water, sustainable farming and forestry while restoring habitats and ecosystems. Building on the current environmental momentum created largely in part by Greta Thunberg’s climate strike and Extinction Rebellion’s global activism, this project is creating a blueprint for how “youth action and conservation can bring change,” according to the Guardian. The youth group will begin by conducting ecological surveys with local grade school students to inform restoration plans.
