The Weight of the World

What if art had the power to regenerate life? One artist has found a way to help save damaged or destroyed coral reefs through sculpture. Over the course of 10 years, Jason DeCaires Taylor has perfected a pH neutral concrete recipe used in the production of underwater figures. These works not only support marine life by providing places to hide, grow, and breed, but they also sustain coral growth. According to this article, they are designed to “help established reef beds re-populate or create new coral growth in areas” at risk. They are crafted to continuously adapt, evolve, and change over time. His latest piece called “Ocean Atlas”, is the largest underwater sculptor on earth and reaches over 5.5 metres high. Modelled on a young Bahamian girl, the figure caries the weight of the ocean on her shoulders alluding to the vitality and fragility of reef beds.
