Stockholm Leads the Way Again

As the fastest growing city in Europe, Stockholm's plans for new housing are playing with both the ideas of imcreasing urban density and creating workable, walkable greenspace. Much like Calgary’s +15, the designers and architects wanted to give people the ability to walk above street level, with the added bonus of new, fully integrated living space. Opposition to old fashioned skyscrapers is very much justified, given the carbon footprint of their building, maintaining them and heating them (not to mention the disturbances in natural sunlight and wind movement). Building cities up instead of out to manage increasing populations is not a new idea, but it is a good one. The inclusion of pedestrian friendly walkways and urban greenspaces take that good idea, and make it great.
