Innovations at the Edge

Many innovations can come from reimaging existing systems to capture the ‘waste’, for example, Lucid Energy’s closing the loop by harvesting renewable energy from gravity-fed municipal water pipelines.

Another is the Sahara Forest Project, using restorative practices to establish vegetation in arid areas and reverse the trend of desertification. An example of multi-purposing, it proposes to establish groups of interconnected economic activities in different low lying desert areas around the world—an integrated system designed to harvest technological synergies while minimizing waste.

Another example of integrative thinking is this underground urban farm that also heats the building above it in Stockholm.

But as we know, climate action requires not just technology, but changes in human behaviour—the design of cities—and this video on the architecture of cooperation is illuminating. Not a short video, but interesting.
