If you do not know where you come from, then you don't know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, then you don't know where you're going. And if you don't know where you're going, you're probably going wrong
~ Terry Pratchett
In order to understand where we are now, we need to ‘see’ the nature of our impacts and discern the patterns that contribute to both unsustainable and sustainable pathways. We need to be able to appreciate both the trees and the forest simultaneously. Through our visualizations on statistical and trend analyses, we attempt to illuminate these patterns and emerging trends on critical sustainable development issues and public policy directions.
A Picture of Energy Use in Canada
Energy is the fundamental driving force of all life and community infrastructure; it influences the ways we work, play and live and our future options for human well-being. The manner in which we develop and operate our energy systems is a critical first step in achieving sustainable communities and lifestyles. We, therefore, must ask – what has Canada relied on for energy and how will we continue to power this country? We invite you to enter this visualization and explore the last half-century of Canadian energy use, looking at where our energy has come from, how much we have produced, and what our levels of usage have been. |
