FCM Community Buildings Retrofit Initiative

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has launched a new video designed to help municipalities identify ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by retrofitting community buildings. The video explains the pathway approach taken by the Community Buildings Retrofit initiative, a program designed to upgrade existing community buildings to lower their greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy performance, and extend their life cycles.

This initiative is part of the Green Municipal Fund program, which provides funding and resources to support sustainable infrastructure projects in Canadian municipalities. The Community Buildings Retrofit initiative was launched in 2018 to provide funding, technical assistance, and other resources to help municipalities upgrade public buildings, such as recreation centres, libraries, and community centres, to reduce their energy consumption and lower their carbon footprint.

Municipalities have a critical role to play in tackling climate change, and jurisdiction over a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions. This FCM intiative is one of many infrastructure development and upgrading programs designed to help municipalities reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and to contribute to Canada's overall climate change strategy.
