Local Governments and Climate Action

In February, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) held their 2023 Sustainable Communities Conference in Ottawa. Participants discussed climate action strategies and learned about the tools for making communities more environmentally sustainable. Delegates from SSG consulting firm published five of their key takeaways from the conference, which highlight the importance of local government action in addressing climate change.

Municipalities have jurisdiction over a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions, and as our research has found, are often far more innovative and ambitious in tackling them than either the federal or provincial governments. Local governments can also be more accessible to climate activists. Federal and provincial decisions often receive more attention in our media landscape, but local cities and communities have the power to lead the fight against climate change.
