Working Towards Sustainability with Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) Technology

Multiple solutions including technological, social, ecological and economic are required in order to work towards sustainability. One solution in the technological field known as building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) is on the rise. Unlike traditional solar panels that are attached to buildings, BIPVs are integrated into building materials including shingles, windows, cladding and skylights. There are many benefits to BIPVs including an increased area to generate solar power, easier installation and lower carbon footprint than traditional building materials such as concrete. Not only are BIPVs capable of producing as much power as traditional solar panels (depending on the materials used and their transparency), but they can potentially generate heat as well. In order to allow for wider adoption of this sustainable solution, building codes need to be modified and governments need to provide incentives for investing in this sustainable technology.
