Deborah Irvine, Vice President of the Vancouver Foundation, broke down some statistics last week for a student audience in Victoria, BC about the state of charities in Canada.
Did you know that 10.6 billion is donated annually in Canada? This is a lot of capital, especially compared to other countries, but where does it all go? There are actually 85, 000 registered charities in Canada, a number that has doubled since 1980. This might sound like great progress, but having so many charities can cause donor fatigue and uneven distribution. For example, the top 1% of charities takes in 60% of the revenue. And while most people give to health, 40% of the money goes to religious causes.
