Is it enough?

At COP 15, the prime minister committed C$800m of funding over seven years to Indigenous-led conversation projects in Canada across an area the size of Egypt, starting a “story of reconciliation” with Indigenous peoples.

Indigenous peoples have been found repeatedly to be the best guardians of biodiversity, and conservation projects led by them have seen success in reviving ailing populations globally, including a recent effort to save endangered caribou in western Canada.

COP 15, led by Canada and China, in spite of recent differences has produced a new draft of the agreement going into the negotiations, with at least 22 target and four goals being discussed. There is conflict, however, over whether or not to allow extractive industries such as mining and drilling in protected areas, provided they did not negatively affect biodiversity.

Negotiations are scheduled to run until 19 December.
