Climate Justice

Framing climate change as a human rights issue is currently gaining momentum. Former Irish President Mary Robinson recently spoke about climate justice, pointing out that not only are more affluent nations better able to protect themselves, they are also responsible for the majority of the carbon emissions that are currently affecting their less developed neighbours in life changing ways. From massive flooding and drought, to rising sea levels, many developing countries are struggling to cope with the day to day reality of climate change. In September, Pope Francis recently called on the American Congress for action on climate change, immigration, poverty and capital punishment, laying down a challenge for the United States to transcend division and rediscover its ideals.
