Sense of Place

As part of our research into Vitality we understand that vitality is the difference between communities thriving, rather than merely surviving. Through this research, we have also learned that a sense of place is crucial. This connection to place tends not to be exclusively to the built environment, but to the people, relationships we form and the physical characteristics of place. The connections between place, space, diversity and networks is fundamental to identity and connection to place, that are generated.

The diagram below explores the importance of key concepts related to a sense of place that have emerged from the data collected over the last decade. The overall square totals 100% with each of the smaller squares showing how much each concept is related to the overall theme of place. The size of each square illuminates the importance of that particular concept.
