We now need to lead forward

Now that Oxford Dictionaries has declared “climate emergency” the word of the year for 2019, following a hundred-fold increase in usage, and 25 countries and 1,195 jurisdictions have declared a climate emergency, what are our politicians doing about it?

We need to act now, this year is the second hottest the Earth has ever experienced and the science is clear the trends will rise. Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney urges Canadian political leaders to take ambitious steps on fighting climate change, even if those steps are deeply unpopular with their own voter base. Even the banks are now getting on board about climate risks and costs.

What is needed, based on our climate change research, is a co-ordinated suite of strong legislation, innovative policy instruments, financial incentives and bold, decisive government leadership.
