This past Sunday I went to see Alegria, performed by Cirque du Soleil. Alegria takes its name from the Spanish word for “joy” and is an operatic interpretation of the struggle for power and the invigorating energy of youth. It made me think about two things. If we are capable of creating and producing such a wondrous and beautiful performative story, then surely we can limit our greenhouse gas emissions to a 1.5-degree increase. We have the knowledge, the information and the science to start now, it is now all about political leadership to create the conditions. And it made me think about the power of youth, and especially the courage and clarity of Greta Thunberg. We have a federal election coming up, get out and vote for those politicians who support transformative change to combat climate pollution and who are willing to collaborate. For we will need unprecedented collaboration to implement a carbon neutral economy, just as Algeria is performed by a remarkable team who ‘spot’ one another.
