Resilience

When communities are capable of self-organization and have the capacity to anticipate and plan for the future we say they have resilience. We believe resilience is partially a function of the social networks and diversity embedded in a community. It is a capacity that manifests itself through structures that encourage the localization of goods and services, democratic governance, innovation, learning and adaptation.

The diagram below explores the importance of key concepts related to resilience that have emerged from the data we have collected over the last decade. The overall square totals 100% with each of the smaller squares showing how much each concept contributed to resilience. The size of each square illuminates the importance of that particular concept.
