United We Can, Downtown Eastside Vancouver

Led by Ken Lyotier, this street charity’s first business was the United We Can Bottle Deposit which opened in January 1995. It now serves thousands of inner city residents every month and recycles millions of containers each year. The depot has generated 24 full time jobs for people, many of whom have multiple barriers to re-entering the workforce. It has also generated millions of dollars into the local economy via refunds on returned empties. Operating costs are covered with handling fees paid by the industry.

How else are we to make the industries that are so central to modern societies consistent with our visions of a sustainable future?

A Dynamic Balance - Social Capital and Sustainable Community Development

A Dynamic Balance is a timely and provocative call for reconciliation and reconnection within and between communities. It makes unique links between two schools of thought, social capital and sustainable community development, showing how both are interdependent and can be mobilized by governments for greater agency in communities everywhere.

Looking at case studies in both Australia and Canada, it draws upon lessons that can be learned to reconnect large urban centres and smaller communities.
