Energy is the keystone of modern civilization, and as such disruptions to energy supply from accident, natural disaster, or targeted attack have the potential to seriously disrupt society. Are their ways to make energy production and distribution more secure? Are some forms of energy production more secure than others?

Energy Production
As oil supplies shrink, we will have to develop alternative means of energy production. This is a difficult problem; we must develop a reliable, steady energy supply while not compromising the global environment. Likely there is no one right answer, and many energy production techniques will supply our civilization in the future.

Oil supplies, in particular, are experiencing the pressure of growing demand from America, India and China at the same time as many fields are passing their production peak. Are we entering a period of scarce and expensive energy?

From the morning commute to the shipping of goods, our society is built around cheap transportation. The infrastructure of our cities and towns assumes cheap and plentiful automobile travel. Will we move towards higher densities and public transport? Or will we bet on a hydrogen fueled vehicle fleet to preserve our quality of life?

Why is it that lettuce from New Zealand can be sold in Canada at the same price as a domestic product? What will the food system look like in a world where energy is much more expensive?
