This research project is an outcome of my SSHRC funded 3-year research program that explored the relationship between social capital and sustainable community development.  From our case study communities, there seemed to be something else, other than social capital, that made the difference between ‘getting by to getting ahead’. I began to ask the question why does one individual transcend a tragedy when another collapses, and why does one community collapse when their single-resource industry leaves and another moves forward and diversifies?

This research project, again a three-year standard research SSHRC grant, is examining the relationship, if any, between, agency, that is, human agency, social capital and sustainable community development. As our first research outcome, we invite to complete our survey to help us collect data to answer this question. Over 3000 Canadians have now responded from across the country, so please contribute to the quality of our research by taking the time to complete our survey.
